Have-a-go sledge hockey event in Melfort on Saturday

Residents in the Melfort area have another chance to check out the sport of sledge hockey.

The Melfort Sledge Hockey ‘Have-A-Go’ event, organized by the Saskatchewan Wheelchair Sports Association (SWSA) is coming up Saturday from 11:45 a.m. to 1:15 p.m. at the Northern Lights Palace.

“It’s open for anyone over the age of five, and it’s open for anyone who has a physical disability, or who is able-bodied,” SWSA Bridging the Gap Provincial Coordinator told northeastNOW.

She said there has been an interest in setting up a sledge hockey club in Melfort, and the association decided to create awareness in the community, to make sure there would be enough people for a team, and try to build a program.

A sledge hockey introduction in Melfort a couple of weeks ago saw a lot of interest, and a lot of fun. A SWSA club coach and a peer athlete came to the city to help tailor the event to work with people with disabilities.

Gosselin said they also helped ensure the event was inclusive, and was a safe environment for everybody.

Saturday’s event has also had a strong response with a significant number of registrations, according to Gosselin.

“Following this event we’ll be looking at putting together a [sledge hockey] program based out of Melfort, so everybody can stay tuned in the fall for any more information that will come up,” Gosselin said. “We hope to get a program going for some of the kids with disabilities that are within that area.”

To register by Friday’s deadline, email chantal@swsa.ca or call 306-975-0824.

Gosselin said they need to know who would like to participate, and their age. You are also asked to bring your own helmet and gloves.
