City of Melfort updates public on services available amid COVID-19 pandemic

The City of Melfort continues to discuss the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Yesterday, administrators announced the closure of all city-owned facilities, including the Northern Lights Palace, City Hall, Kerry Vickar Centre, Historic Post Office, Melfort and District Museum, and the Melfort Landfill.

The City has issued another news release today clarifying some of their services:

“Though our facility doors may be locked, we continue to work to ensure our citizens have access to important services. We have established the following new procedures:

Account Payments – Customers can make payments using the drop box at City Hall, through the mail or online banking.

Criminal Record Checks – Limited to processing of criminal record checks required for employment purposes only. If you require a criminal record check for employment contact City Hall by phone at (306) 752-5911 or by email at city@melfort.ca to facilitate a payment method and confirmation for the RCMP that payment has been obtained.

Handi Van – Service has been limited to medically necessary trips only. For medically necessary trips please call 306-752-5600. (Note: We are not able to provide shopping trips for provisions. Local grocery stores and pharmacies are offering delivery services. Please contact them directly.)

Landfill – Access to the landfill has been limited to licensed commercial contractors with an existing City of Melfort Landfill receivable account. If you meet the above listed criteria and require use of the landfill contact City Hall by phone at (306) 752-5911 or by email at city@melfort.ca to make preapproval arrangements for use of the landfill facility.

Lutz said the Handi-Van is to be limited to essential transportation only.

“People that are needing services from the Handi-Van should call ahead, and right now they’ll determine whether your travel is considered necessary, and they will make arrangements for you,” Director of Development, Planning and Community Relations Brent Lutz told northeastNOW.

Lutz said both Prairie North Co-op and Cindy’s Independent Grocer are offering to deliver groceries to those self-isolating, immunocompromised, or who otherwise can’t shop in person.

The city also continues to try to find a way to provide services at the landfill, according to Lutz.

The building is blocked at the landfill, but Lutz said commercial customers have options.

“You can contact the landfill and they can make arrangements so that you can get services from there,” Lutz said.
