Flush with caution

Battlefords residents advised to flush only toilet paper

The City of North Battleford released a statement to the public to remind residents not to flush anything down the toilet aside from toilet paper. The list, available on the city’s website, includes cigarette butts, diapers, paper towels, tissues and flushable wipes.

Communications Administrator Dustin MacDonald said they want to make sure residents avoid using materials that could cause structural damage and put a burden on employees.

“If these materials end up in the sewer system, they cause damage to their home, their neighbour’s home and the waste water treatment system,” MacDonald said.

While many companies sell wipes listed as flushable, they do no disintegrate, as they are made of stronger materials than toilet paper. Once flushed, they can easily get stuck in the sewer.
