Local photographer bringing ‘Front Steps Project’ to northeast communities

A local photographer is hoping to brighten some family’s days, while also raising money for the North East SPCA (NESPCA).

Tarynn Freed currently lives in Kinistino and was teaching before the COVID-19 pandemic put things to a halt in Saskatchewan, and the rest of the world. She’s still trying to teach remotely, but there’s a bit more time on her hands.

Freed was contacted by someone who works closely with the NESPCA and had suggested to do something called the “Front Steps Project.” It is an initiative started in the United States where photographers go around town taking pictures of families on their front porch who may be in isolation. This Saturday Freed will be going around Melfort and Kinistino doing just that.

“Something to get the people out of the house during this trying time right now in the world,” she said. “And just kind of come together with your families. Come as you are, so if you’re wearing your pajamas, or if your kids want to dress up, bring your animals.”

The photo sessions would only be a couple of minutes, and Freed said the photos will be edited and then sent to the families via an online gallery.

“Just something you can look back on and smile I guess,” Freed told northeastNOW. “Even though you’re going through this tough time right now.”

She said appointments are being taken for the shoots through Tarynn Freed Photography on Facebook, or by email at tarynnfreed_4@hotmail.com. The only cost for the shoots is a $20 donation to the NESPCA.

“I’ve just kind of been setting up times based on where people are located,” she said. “So doing a certain area at one time, then moving around town.”

Melfort and Kinistino won’t be the only ones to get this in their communities as Freed also teamed up with Jade Lauren Photography and North East Outreach and Support Services (NEOSS) to do the Front Steps Project in the Tisdale and Naicam areas in the coming weeks. The cost of will be a $20 donation to NEOSS.
