Peter Cherepuschak was born June 18, 1920 to Thomas and Katherine (Pilipow) Cherepuschak. He grew up in Goodeve, SK alongside siblings Pearl, Nick, Mary, Russell, Alex, Natalie, Ladmer and later stepmother Sophie Wrubel and siblings Sylvia, Ernie, Olga and Irene. His childhood in Goodeve gave him a deep appreciation for the rhythms of the land and the trials of farming.
At the age of 16 Peter was entrusted with the family’s newly acquired land near Nipawin, SK. He undertook the responsibility (along with brothers Nick and Russell) of clearing the land and preparing for the arrival of additional family members. However, Peter was not yet ready to settle down for good –he still had many adventures to live. Estevan, SK was his first stop where in 1939 he learned to mine coal. The following year Peter joined the Canadian Army and received his basic training. Fortunately, his value in the mining industry required him to remain in Canada during the war years. This proved lucky indeed as it allowed him to meet and marry the love of his life, Helen Puszkarenko, in 1945.
Peter and Helen began their journey together in Rosedale, AB where he continued mining. The following year, upon Peter’s discharge from the army, the happy couple returned to Nipawin. They settled into their new life, working hard to develop the family farm and a loving household for their five beautiful children. Farming was his passion, which he was able to enjoy as a career for a period of 75 years.
Peter cherished each and every member of his family deeply. He is survived by siblings Mary Starzensky, Russell Cherepuschak, Ladmer Cherepuschak, Sylvia Hamilton, Ernie Cherepuschak, Olga Zwozdesky and Irene Zacharuk; children: Rosemary (Larry) Lee, Sonia Cherepuschak, Rick (Trish) Cherepuschak, and Angie (Leander) Dueck; grandchildren Jordan (Lisa) Lee, Brendon (Kate) Lee, Tawni Cherepuschak, Tanner Cherepuschak, Tedi Cherepuschak, Courtney (Paul) Dueck, Heidi (Eric) Sawatzky, and Lance Dueck; great-grandchildren Henry and Ivy Sawatzky, and Tristan and Griffin Lee; and countless other loved ones. Peter was saddened to be predeceased by father Thomas, mother Katherine, and step-mother Sophie Cherepuschak; siblings Pearl Krenosky, Nick Cherepuschak, Alex Cherepuschak, and Natalie Stratychuk; loving wife Helen Cherepuschak; daughter Linda and son-in-law Jeremy Mahoney.
Peter’s loved ones will forever fondly recall the many memories made together throughout the years. Some of the most cherished recollections include sharing an ice cream (or whiskey), peaceful moments raking leaves or picking roots and the many grandchildren who received their driver’s education at the farm in the little red truck. We will forever remember the early mornings when there was work to be done, and the late nights where there were cards to be played. His memory will forever live on in the memories and hearts of those he left behind.
