Wildfire at Fort à la Corne

A wildfire is burning in the Fort à la Corne forest northwest of Melfort.

According to the provincial wildfire map, the blaze is just north of the Saskatchewan River and is uncontained. The Saskatchewan Public Safety Agency (SPSA) said it’s about 2,500 hectares in size.

In an email to northeastNOW, the Director of Communications for the SPSA, Christopher Clemett, said crews are working on the blaze.

“The Saskatchewan Public Safety Agency is responding to the fire with dozers, ground crews, helicopters and air tankers,” he said all efforts are being made to protect the values in the area.

The wildfire jumped the fire guard at 11:30 a.m. on Thursday, May 14 according to the email.

There’s no word on if the Rio Tinto/Star Diamond mining project is, or could be affected.

Local rural resident Dale Conn, who lives about 10 kilometres west of the blaze, has been keeping a close eye on things along with the wind direction.

“I’ve seen a helicopter up today and there were water bombers going over regularly the last few days. It looked last night like it was under control …there wasn’t a lot of smoke,” he said. “But coming home [from P.A.] this afternoon I noticed it seems to be getting pretty crazy again.”
