Melfort man sentenced for break and enter, will appear in Queen’s Bench for drug charges

A Melfort man facing drug and weapon charges after arrests near Wakaw has been sentenced after pleading guilty.

Barkley Swenson, 46, was given a sentence of 72 days in jail, restitution, and $200 in surcharges. An agreement between Crown and defence counsel was reached ahead of his sentencing on Thursday, Aug. 6. Charges of failure to comply with release order and breach of probation were dropped by the Crown. Swenson remains in custody.

Swenson previously pled guilty to break and enter, failure to comply for condition of undertaking, and theft not exceeding $5,000 in March 2020. However, he pled not guilty to possession of meth and possession of a firearm while prohibited. Those matters have been transferred to Melfort Court of Queen’s Bench, where Swenson will appear on a date to be determined.

The charges stem from when the Prince Albert Crime Reduction team arrested two males and three females in a vehicle at the Shell Gas Station near Wakaw on Jan. 30, as part of an ongoing investigation.

Melfort RCMP and the Prince Albert Integrated Street Enforcement Team also helped execute a search warrant at a home on Stovel Ave. in Melfort. The arrests and subsequent search yielded 29 grams of suspected methamphetamine, other drug paraphernalia, and a replica handgun.

Swenson has been remanded into custody until his appearances. He was sentenced to four months in jail in 2018 in a separate case involving possession of stolen property.
