Nipawin Mayor Rennie Harper seeking re-election
Rennie Harper is seeking a second term as Nipawin’s mayor.
The former board chair of the Kelsey Trail Regional Health Authority became the town’s mayor in 2016. Harper said she was on the fence whether to run for mayor again or not, but Elvina Rumak – her friend, mentor, and former mayor of Hudson Bay – told her the mayor can’t achieve all their goals in one term. Rumak passed away on Sept. 23, and it hit close to home for Harper.
“I’m running for re-election because there are a lot of things we didn’t get done,” Harper told northeastNOW. “There were a lot of things we had to learn, practice, and put into motion that I’d like to see finished. The first year you’re there, you’re orienting and you’re learning all these things, and you’re trying to fit into everything you’re learning. Second year, you’re starting to practice what you were oriented to do. Third year, you’re starting to do your own thing, and fourth year you’re actually starting to think outside the box.”
The big ticket items Harper wants to see in Nipawin during a potential second term as mayor include an assisted living facility for seniors, the completion of the town’s heliport, a landfill run by BARWA that would allow the decommission of the Nipawin landfill, and the completion of an asset management plan.
