2020 Vanity Cup sees thousands of fish caught, thousands of dollars handed out

The 2020 Vanity Cup took place at the Nipawin and District Regional Park on Oct. 3 and 4.

A total of 160 teams competed in the annual walleye fishing tournament, catching a total of 3,299.8 pounds of walleye over the two days. All COVID-19 guidelines were followed during the event including mask use when physical distancing was not possible, not having the typical rules banquet, or awards banquet, and keeping the group sizes limited when not on the water.

This year’s champions were Tyrell Mooney of Star City, and Michael Copeland of Nipawin who went home with the $100,000 grand prize. The pair caught 29.82 pounds on day one, good for the daily cash prize of $5,000, and caught 18.78 pounds of fish on day two for a grand total of 48.6 pounds of fish.

Second place winners for 2020 were Sean and Jeff Hughes out of Bonnyville, Alta. who caught 44.84 pounds of walleye over the two days. They took home the $30,000 second place prize. The pair also won the day two cash prize of $5,000 after catching 27.55 pounds on Sunday.

In third place were Ryan Wiebe and Cliff Warlow of Saskatoon and Martensville. They caught 41.09 pounds of fish over the two days and won $20,000 for their efforts.

The top mixed team of 2020 came from Estevan as Lance Marcotte and Karen Soke caught 37.87 pounds of fish. Their prize is a Minn Kota trolling motor.

Prizes were also given out for the biggest fish of each day. Harvey Friesen and Jed Hutson of Inglis, Man. caught the big walleye of Saturday that weighed in at 12.24 pounds. Their prize was $1,375. Meanwhile, another $1,375 went to Terry and Trevor Shawaga of Cold Lake, Alta. and Okotoks, Alta. Their big catch weighed in at 11.89 pounds.

A total 1,331 fish were caught during the 2020 Vanity Cup. Proceeds of the tournament go to Nipawin Minor Hockey.
