No election needed: Hudson Bay’s council declared via acclamation

As municipalities across Saskatchewan prepare for election day on Monday, Nov. 9, one northeast community will stay off the campaign trail for the month.

The Town of Hudson Bay announced its mayoral and six council candidates all won their respective seats via acclamation following the call for nominations.

Incumbent Mayor Glenn McCaffery will return to the council chambers, as well as five incumbent councillors – Alexis Armit, Mel Cadrain, Meagan Dickson, Betty Lou Palko, and Sherry Pilon. Kelly Stonehouse is the lone new councillor.

According to Teresa Parkman, Hudson Bay’s chief administrative officer, acclamation isn’t entirely rare in the town.

“I know for Hudson Bay it has happened in the past but it’s more likely we end up with an election, Parkman told northeastNOW. “It seems like we’re doing okay that we have enough nominees that are actually excited being on council to put their names in, but not enough to have an election.”

Even though its new council is decided, Parkman said the oath of office can’t take place until the first council meeting following the Nov. 9 municipal election.

Until then, Parkman anticipates conducting an orientation session with the new councillor-elect Stonehouse to get him up to speed on what the goals the mayor and remaining councillors are working towards.

Hudson Bay’s first council meeting following the municipal election is set for Tuesday, Nov. 10.
