Hawks acquire defenceman Kersey Reich from Estevan

The Nipawin Hawks strengthened their defensive core with a trade Sunday morning.

The team announced that defenceman Kersey Reich was acquired from the Estevan Bruins for 17-year-old forward prospect Brenden Holba.

Hawks head coach and general manager Doug Johnson said the deal was one he was happy to make.

“We felt this was a deal we couldn’t pass on. Holba is going to be a very good player in our league but with the depth we have on our list due to the draft and great scouting we had the ability to get a guy in Kersey we feel can be a game-changer for us,” Johnson said.

Reich, 19, scored four goals and added 10 assists for his hometown Bruins last season. Johnson said he was looking to add some offensive firepower to Nipawin’s defence group and Reich provides that.

“He has an exceptional shot and was part of a great defence core in Estevan last year. Our left side on the backend, as well as getting a big shot from the point to help with our offense, was an area we wanted to strengthen and believe we did that in spades getting Kersey,” he added.

Reich will make his way to Nipawin once the weather clears.

The Hawks’ home opener was postponed due to the weather on Nov. 7. The team will now prepare for a home-and-home match up with Melfort beginning Friday, Nov. 13 at Centennial Arena.

The Hawks won their opening game of the season 7-3 in La Ronge.

The Hawks’ next broadcast on Saskatchewan’s Beach Radio is Saturday, Nov. 14 when they visit the Mustangs. The pre-game show begins at 7:15 p.m., puck drop is at 7:30 p.m.
