New funding

Federal and provincial governments invest in Porcupine Plain landfill project

The Saskatchewan and federal governments have announced new funding for the project to decommission and close the Porcupine Plain landfill site.

The federal investment is $60,251, and the provincial funding is $50,204.

“We’ve been expecting it [the funding] for some time,” Porcupine Plain Mayor Nick Wood said. “Today was actually the first time that we heard that we were approved. The cost of operating these facilities is incredible for small communities and large cities.”

Wood said the funding has to be used by 2023. Engineering firm, WSP is working on the project.

“Hopefully WSP will be able to get out there and finish this project for us as soon as conditions are appropriate to start work,” Wood added. “This just seemed like the best choice for this community.”

The project is expected to be completed this spring or summer.

“This has been an ongoing project for quite some time,” Wood said. “We started this process in 2017. “We are very excited. Waste management is a very big issue for all communities in Saskatchewan. It is something that should get a lot more attention going forward.”

This was one of 24 recreation and green infrastructure projects in Saskatchewan receiving new funding under the Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program.

Saskatchewan’s government relations minister Don McMorris and Jim Carr, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s special representative for the prairies, made the announcement Wednesday.
