Melfort Salvation Army postpones in-person worship services

Apr 14, 2021 | 4:00 PM

In-person church services at the Melfort Salvation Army are being postponed after the new public health orders came down on Tuesday that limits worship gathering sizes to 30 people.

Captain Rick Robins said everyone needs to continue to do their part to mitigate the risk of COVID-19 and variants of the virus.

“This is just until things ease up a bit and we will meet again when it is safe to do so,” Robins said.

Virtual church services will continue at 11 a.m. on Sundays as they have since the beginning of the pandemic in March of 2020.

“In Melfort, we have had low cases yet province-wide things are not all that great,” Robins said. “We see this variant come around and it is important to remember what is most important and the safety of our people and community is of utmost importance.”

While meeting in-person and gathering to worship is prefered, Robins said it is not always essential.

“There is so much more to church than the meeting for an hour or hour and a half each week,” Robins said. “The church is not just the building, it is the people and we can’t have church if we have no people left.”

The postponement will last for the next two weeks out of an abundance of caution as the public health order for the limitation on numbers is in place until April 26.

“As the church, we are called to be a positive example,” Robins said.

The virtual church services have gone over very well in the area with an average of 600 views per week, even while in-person services had returned for a short while.

“It is exciting to see this part of the ministry flourish,” Robins said. “Not everyone can be at church on Sunday’s with other commitments and life. So this way they can still be a part of it.”

The Salvation Army has also started their new virtual children’s ministry on Wednesday’s at 4 p.m.

Also announced by the Government of Saskatchewan on Tuesday was limiting household bubbles to immediate households.
