National Volunteer Week

Pollon’s passion for hockey has him beloved by Trojans players and coaches

It is National Volunteer week and northeastNOW is featuring community volunteers who go above and beyond all year round.

If you’ve been to a Tisdale Trojans hockey game over the past couple of seasons, you may have noticed Sawyer Pollon around the team.

The recently turned 11-year-old is the Trojans stick boy and helps the team with a number of things including laundry and stats.

It started for Sawyer a few years ago as his dad Rob was coaching with current Trojans Head Coach Dennis Kubat with the North East Wolfpack U15 AA team. They brought Sawyer on board to help out with various things with the team and it grew from there to the Trojans after Kubat joined the staff there.

Sawyer told northeastNOW that he enjoys hanging around the team on a day-to-day basis.

“I think it’s pretty fun just being around the dressing room with older people that are deeper into their hockey careers,” he said. “And to see where they’re going to go.”

He said that it doesn’t matter about getting paid, but it’s important to do something that you enjoy.

“Not very many 10-year-olds get to hang out with the Trojans every day,” Sawyer said.

Sawyer was also around for the Trojans run at the Telus Cup West Regionals in 2019, where he not only helped the team itself but collected lots of the stats that would ultimately go on social media.

His dad Rob said the teams treat Sawyer well and they look after him. Rob said it’s pretty cool to see the players take his son under their wing.

“He really enjoys it, so it’s awesome to see him take part in it,” Rob said. “And it’s big for our community, this team, so I think it’s important to support the team and do what you can.”

Kubat called Sawyer “a hockey guy” who loves the game.

“He can tell you player stats, what sticks they use, skates they wear, you name it,” he said. “He is loved by the boys and is willing to do any jobs the coaches ask.”
