Carrot River Fire Department welcomes new truck to hall

May 14, 2021 | 8:00 AM

The Carrot River Fire Department has welcomed a new truck into their hall.

Fire Chief Bryce Lytle said the new truck was a need for them to help serve the RM better as another current vehicle is too heavy for some wetter areas. He said this 2020 pumper truck will be a great help to them.

“(The truck) allows us to get into the field better,” Lytle said. “Little more ground clearance than what we had on the last truck, as well as having that option for four-wheel drive in the event that we do get ourselves into a little bit of softer ground, we’re able to lock everything up and get out of there.”

The new truck also has self contained breathing apparatus abilities, and will fit more members than the previous truck.

To welcome the new truck into the hall, the department conducted the traditional ‘wetting down’ and push of the new truck. Normally, there would be more eyes on the event than just the department, but due to COVID-19 restrictions, that was not possible.

“We invited back four of our retired members,” Lytle said. “And they actually drove the truck out of the hall, got the pump engaged, pulled the line, and they were the ones that sprayed down the new truck.”

Lytle added that it’s good to bring back members who have long lasting memories of using that truck and letting them use it one last time. He said it’s also a good way to bring the past and present of the department together.

“(Our new members) get to talk to them, hear the stories, get their knowledge and keep them a part of the department,” he said. “Even on days that they’ve retired and they’re not around as much as they used to be.”
