Humboldt Pride Week to feature drag show, painted crosswalk, and more

Humboldt Pride Week is on the horizon.

The week begins on Monday, May 31 and will start with a pride flag raising at Humboldt City Hall. There will be a number of other events throughout the week as well. Some of the events include a ‘Rainbow Coffee’ workshop, a diversity pride worship service, a talent night featuring local LGBTQ and ally talent. Friday’s event is also a first for Humboldt as ‘Drag Me Across Saskatchewan’ will be holding two drag shows.

“We’re super excited to bring that,” said Humboldt Pride Network Founder and Chair Andrew Matheson. “We’ve been trying to do a drag show in Humboldt for a very long time.”

One of the shows will be for all ages, while the other will be for 15 and older.

There will also be the usual storytimes throughout the week where stories that promote inclusivity will be read by local volunteers.

Matheson said Pride Week in Humboldt is important as they foster inclusivity and diversity in rural Saskatchewan.

“We wanted to really push for a rural initiative of pride,” Matheson said. “To show people that they don’t need to go and leave their rural roots to find inclusivity and diversity.”

Another new feature for Pride Week this year will be a painted pride crosswalk, according to Matheson. It is being done in conjunction with the public arts committee in Humboldt.

“By the first day of Pride Week, we will have that crosswalk in place,” Matheson said. “And ready for people to witness and enjoy just as much as we’re super excited to do that ourselves.”

Matheson said they found out on Tuesday night that Humboldt City Council had approved the crosswalk.

Matheson added there’s been a huge growth of support for Pride Week over the past few years and it’s great to see more and more people asking to help, and wanting to educate themselves more.

Mayor Michael Behiel said he’s proud to endorse Pride Week and Humboldt’s values of inclusivity.

“We are all equal regardless of race, sexual orientation, economic status, and so forth,” Behiel said. “And celebrating our diversity helps to create a bonded community and keep Humboldt one of the greatest places to live, work and play.”
