New welcome sign installed on north end of Melfort

Melfort Communities in Bloom (CiB) is doing their part to welcome residents and visitors to the city.

On Saturday, the newest ‘welcome’ sign was installed on the north end of Broadway Ave.

CiB member Peggy George told northeastNOW they wanted to create something that would be unique to Melfort.

“It doesn’t get much more unique than an iconic prairie elevator,” George said. “It seemed like a great place to put it beside the seeder, and we are really happy to have it there.”

The sign project has been in the works since January according to George.

“When we get visits from CiB judges, they usually make comments about the lack of Welcome to Melfort signs and so we had been trying to come up with something,” George said.

In the meantime, the Rotary Club of Melfort had been in contact with Melfort CiB wondering if they would be interested in partnering on a project.

“We already had the dream of the elevator, so we ran that idea with the Rotary and they were more than thrilled to be part of that,” George said.

A donation of $3000 was provided for the sign by Rotary, a grant through Saskatchewan Lotteries, and the City of Melfort paid for the installation.

“We can’t do these things alone and if it wasn’t for donations and grants, these things wouldn’t happen,” George said.

There is a bit more landscaping that will need to be finished at the site and eventually a sign to acknowledge Rotary and Sask Lotteries will be put up.

Another partnership coming up for CiB is with the Melfort Legion.

“We are going to be promoting a veteran banner program so if you have a veteran that you would like up on a banner, stay tuned,” George said.

The group also added a metal flower and a pair of ostriches to the corner of Broadway Ave. and Wesley St.

“We brought that flower out of storage and we thought the ostrich’s might like a new home too for a while,” George said. “It turned out to be a bigger wow factor on that corner.”

The ostriches were previously located at the north end of Main St. in the Parkview place flowerbed.
