Lawrence (Lorne) Willingdon Orr was born on May 11, 1928 to George and Elsie Orr in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan. Lorne was the 4th of 7 children, brothers Harold, Arnold, Ken and sisters Florence, Ruby and Reta. Lorne’s unusual middle name came from the Lord of Willingdon, who was visiting the Moose Jaw hospital at the time of Lorne’s birth and selected Lorne as the lucky recipient to bear his name.
George and Elsie moved the family to the Pleasant Valley area in 1933 when they relocated their farm from Val Marie due to the drought. Lorne stayed and worked on the family farm for several years after finishing high school then he headed west to Alberta. There he went to Red Deer College to study music. He then moved to Lethbridge where he worked at the Research station. While in Alberta, Lorne married his first wife and had 2 sons, Dallas & Terry. In December 2018, Dallas passed away.
Lorne eventually returned to Saskatchewan. It was at that time that he met Robin (Roberta Upton) in 1968.
Lorne and Robin married on September 6, 1970. This year would have marked 51 years of marriage for them. On January 18, 1973 they welcomed their first child, Amy Nicole, followed quickly by Shawn on December 30, 1973. On June 6, 1975 Shane was born and lastly on April 5, 1979, Craig. Lorne and Robin settled the family south of Star City in 1983, where Lorne worked as a farm hand until his retirement in 2000 at the age of 72. In February of 2013, the family lost Shane after a long battle with kidney disease.
Carpentry and horses were Lorne’s favorite pastimes. He spent many hours out in the shop building anything from doll houses to furniture to cabins. Lorne enjoyed the outdoors and especially the mountains. He spent many afternoons having wiener roasts with the grandkids in the backyard at the farm.
Lorne’s greatest treasures were his family. His grandchildren took centre stage and he always had time to spend with them.
Lorne is lovingly remembered by his wife Robin, sons: Terry (Shelley), Shawn (Trudy- Bradyn, Ashton, Landon), Craig (Jaime- Isaac, Sophie) and daughter Nicole.
