Barron’s Funeral Chapel and Northeast Appliances Plus to host a mental health barbecue

Sep 26, 2021 | 8:00 AM

Barron’s Funeral Chapel and Northeast Appliances in Tisdale are hosting a barbecue in hopes of raising awareness about mental health in the community.

The two businesses have teamed up in hopes of giving the community information about where to access mental health care.

Teena Deforest-Anderson, owner of Northeast Appliance Plus, said the stigma around mental illness is one of the reasons people are afraid to seek care.

“We have a lot of resources that people are unaware of, which is part of the reason why we are doing this push to make it aware,” Deforest-Anderson said. “There is in person services that are walk in counselling that you can go online and book, walk in same day and never have to have another meeting again or to have a follow up meeting.”

Candice Wallin-Burgess, funeral director and embalmer at Barron’s Funeral Chapel, said both businesses see the affect mental health has on the community.

“On a professional level we see a lot of families coming in and their affected by it or their family members are affected by it,” Wallin-Burgess said.

The pair are collecting donations at the barbecue for Cameco Step up for Mental Health.

“We are both signed up for the five kilometre run, jog or walk. The event is very family oriented,” Wallin-Burgess said. “Cameco is also matching funds raised.”

At the barbecue Tisdale’s suicide prevention committee will be on site with Thor the mental health advocate giving out information about mental health services available in the community.

“They are not there counselling they are there to let people know that they exist and what resources they have available to them,” Deforest-Anderson said.

The barbecue will take place at Northeast Appliance Plus in Tisdale from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Sept. 28.

There will be a free burger and drink for those in attendance.
