Margaret Cole went to her Heavenly home on September 25, 2021.
Margaret was born to Jacob and Helena Krause in Samara, Russia on August 25, 1927. When she was only 2 years old, Margaret immigrated to Canada with her parents and older sister, Helen, and their young family settled in the Langham area. At an early age, Margaret accepted Jesus as her Saviour, and never wavered in her commitment to honour and serve Him her entire life.
After finishing public school, Margaret attended Taber Bible School in Dalmeny, SK. Her teen years were spent on the family and neighbouring farms, where there was never a shortage of chores, including milking cows (which she disliked), gardening, and caring for her younger siblings and others’ children just to help meet family expenses.
In the winter of 1948-49, she took a correspondence course and then worked for the Scripture Mission. That summer took her to Resource, SK, to teach Vacation Bible School. She began attending nearby Queen’s Park Nazarene Church, where she would soon meet her future husband, George Cole.
Margaret and George were married on June 28, 1950, in Dalmeny, SK. They made their home on the Cole family farm in the Queen’s Park District. They would spend the next 30 years raising a family, farming, worshipping God, and enjoying the fellowship of many community friends.
Just one month shy of their first wedding anniversary, on May 28, 1951, Sandra was born. From there, the family grew quickly: Debbie arrived in June 1952, Dwight in December 1953, and then Valerie in February 1955. They would take a break (poor Mom!) but then add two more boys several years later – Brian in September 1960 and Terry in August 1962.
Despite being busy with young children, Mom excelled at cooking, gardening, sewing, and being active in the community and church. She would seek employment off the farm once the children were gone or grown.
In the fall of 1980, Margaret and George purchased a house in Melfort, but still kept farming on the Cole farm. Margaret also began work as a baker at the Melfort Co-op cafeteria. There, she would become famous for her incredible cinnamon buns. We can’t even fathom how many dozens she made at the Co-op, yet still sold many, many more privately.
Mom continued to serve God as a member of the Melfort Nazarene Church, where she was involved in Sunday School and all the social functions (where she always provided her delicious baking). Mom loved to sing and had a sweet voice and talent that she shared with the family and the congregation, harmonizing with Dad. Bless her, she is now singing in Heaven.
While living in town, Mom also found that gardening wasn’t such a chore anymore. She could spend more time planting and nurturing beautiful flower beds.
Her greatest love and pride were her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Her door, her fridge, and a freezer full of baking were always open to the kids. She graced her walls and shelves with many pictures and spent as much time with them as time and distance would allow.
In 2014, Mom and Dad sold their house and moved to Diefenbaker Senior High Rise, so that home and yard duties would be less demanding as they aged. Shortly after the move, Mom’s health and mobility began to deteriorate and she would go into long-term care at Parkland Place. As her health continued to decline, she longed to go be with her Heavenly Father, but her work on Earth was not done. However, on Saturday, September 25, with Dad holding her hand, God took our Dear Mother to a place of eternal peace.
Margaret was predeceased by an infant son; her parents, Jacob and Helena Krause; her sister, Helen; her brothers, Jake and Henry Krause; and 5 infant siblings.
Margaret is lovingly remembered by her beloved husband, George, of 71 years; children Sandra (Ron) Flater, Debbie (Tom) Treen, Dwight (Arlene) Cole, Val (Glen) Ertell, Brian (Verna) Cole, and Terry (Rona) Hadley-Cole; and siblings Agnes Wiebe, John (Adeline) Krause, Pete (Eve) Krause, Mary (Herman) Wiebe, and Lorraine Krause.
She will be held in the hearts of her precious grandchildren – Michael Cole, Aaron and Christopher Huber, Jeffrey Mooney, Jennifer Althouse, Jordan Mooney, Brandon and Claire Flater, Tawny Babcock, Lanaya Graham, Jana Treen, Emily and Katherine Cole, and Maria Hadley-Cole – as well as 19 great-grandchildren, many nieces and nephews, extended family, and a wide community of friends.
