Provincial High School Cross Country Championships to be held at Carlton Trail Ski Club’s Dixon Hills

The 2021 Saskatchewan High School Athletics Association (SHSAA) Provincial Cross Country Championships are being hosted on Saturday, Oct. 16, at Carlton Trail Ski Club’s Dixon Hills near Humboldt, Sask.

This year’s championship will see 589 participants competing in the Intermediate, Junior, and Senior categories. School teams will vie for championships in the 1A, 2A, 3A, 4A, and 5A classifications.

Races will begin with the Intermediate Girls at 12:00 p.m. and conclude with the Senior Boys race later in the afternoon. Awards presentations will follow the final tabulation of results.

The Saskatchewan High Schools Athletic Association recognizes the current public health situation in Saskatchewan and has put together a comprehensive plan to ensure that safety is the number one priority while offering the opportunity to compete.

Dave Sandomirsky, executive director of the SHSAA, said this year is all about the competitions and that there will be no opening ceremonies or award presentations to conclude the championships, however, that there will still be spectators.

“We’re trying to make it as safe as possible, with hopes of limiting the spread, should there be any,” said Sandomirsky. “We’ve been hearing that the sport itself is safe and that the activities around the sport would be what could cause the spread. There will be spectators, but the nice thing is that it’s an outdoor event spread across a very large area.”

Due to the pandemic, this provincial championship was cancelled last year, therefore this will be the first time since 2019 that the event is able to be held. Sandomirsky said he is thrilled that this event is able to run again and that it’s pretty obvious that everyone else is just as excited.

“We can tell that the student athletes and the teacher coaches have really missed it and they recognize how important it is for engagement and morale and representing their school. These are really important aspects of high school sport.”

Sandomirsky also mentioned how this event has been an extremely long wait and that everyone has been counting down the days till they were able to get back together and compete.

“This has been on our calendar for the last two years and we’re just really thankful that we’re able to carry on and host it this year,” said Sandomirsky. “We’re really looking forward for everyone to come together and it looks like it’s going to be a really nice day for running and competing and having a successful event this weekend.”
