‘Can’t have a championship team without adversity’: Mustangs looking to get back into win column against Notre Dame

Oct 26, 2021 | 5:54 PM

The Melfort Mustangs seem to be going through their first case of true adversity during the 2021/2022 Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL) season.

They’ve lost back-to-back games for the first time this season, and a number of players are on the shelf with injuries, and they continue to pile up. However, even with the tough times, defenceman Lucas Ochitwa said it’s all part of the process.

“Can’t have a championship team without a little bit of adversity,” he said. “So, it’s definitely a learning curve for the boys, it was tough games [against Humboldt].”

As for the injury trouble that the team has been going through, a number of defencemen, as well as some important forwards remain out of the lineup heading into this week. Although, Ochitwa isn’t worried.

“We’ve got a really deep squad, we’ve got a really good roster,” Ochitwa said. “It doesn’t really matter who’s in the lineup I think we’ve got a phenomenal chance to win against any team in this league every single night.”

The team they’ll go up against on Tuesday will be the Notre Dame Hounds. It’ll be the second meeting of the year between the two clubs as they met at the SJHL Showcase in Warman, a 3-1 win for the Melfort Mustangs. The Hounds are sixth in the SJHL, and have won back-to-back games heading into their meetings against Melfort.

Game time on Tuesday is 8 p.m. with the pre-game show at 7:45 p.m. with Mat Barrett on 105CJVR.
