The Humboldt Broncos are making a name for themselves on the ice and the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL) is taking note.

Rayce Ramsay has been recognized as this week’s SGEU MVP of the Week following a winning week in the Broncos net.

Over a three-game winning streak, Ramsay stopped 79 out of 85 shots on goal with a goal against average of 1.95 and a save percentage of 0.929. Ramsay currently has the most wins with a 10-3 record and spent 760 minutes in goal in 13 games.

Head coach Scott Barney told northeastNOW that seeing a goalie top the MVP listing is a rare thing but Ramsay deserves the recognition.

“He’s been our best player consistently every night and good to see him get rewarded.”

Joining Ramsay this week is RBC Forward of the Week, Logan Kurki. With six goals in three games, including a hat trick plus one in front of a home crowd on Oct. 23 at the Elgar Petersen Arena, Kurki is now top of the SJHL leaderboard with 21 points in 11 games and just under two points per game average.

Seeing a Bronco being recognized by the league has not been uncommon this season.

Broncos rookie and LeRoy native, Conner McGrath, kicked off his first week of the regular season winning the RBC Player of the Week and topping the leaderboard with seven points following two wins against the Notre Dame Hounds in the opening weekend. Fellow Broncos Nicksha Eric and Ramsay would join McGrath on the list as runners up in the defenceman and goalie of the week respectively.

The following week would see Alec Saretsky win SGEU MVP of the Week for his combined nine points earned with six goals and three assists over four games, including a hat trick during the SJHL Showcase. McGrath would also join his fellow linesman as he was once again recognized as DirectWest’s Rookie of the Week for his three goals, six assists and nine points over four games.

With the Broncos now top of the SJHL’s Global Ag Risk Solutions Division and second overall in the league, winning as a team and having winning players go hand and hand, said Barney.

“In the end, our biggest thing is, we just want to win games and obviously, in the end, win as much as we can. And then usually when that happens, you know, individual stats and rewards usually follow with that.”

Fans will see the Broncos fight to hold on to the top spots this week with a trip to North Battleford on Oct. 29 to take on the North Stars and a visit from the Weyburn Red Wings on Oct. 30.
