Tips for keeping your furry friends safe this winter

With the cold weather approaching in Saskatchewan, pet owners are wondering how to keep their furry friends safe during the winter months.

Doctor of Veterinary Medicine at Gateway Veterinarian Services Victor Kernaleguen said that if animals are to be outdoors in cold weather, they have greater energy requirements.

“Making sure they have adequate food. Especially if they are living outside, making sure we are keeping up with what their energy requirements are is important,” he said.

Aside from food, Dr Kernaleguen stressed pets in winter need one thing more than anything else.

“During the cold months, the biggest thing we talk about is making sure they have a water source. So, making sure there is either a heated pet dish or water bowl.”

While some owners may rush to purchase winter boots for their animals, depending on how often the animals are outside, it may not be necessary.

“Some animals get sensitive feet, so putting boots on those feet helps them from feeling as cold, especially animals who stay in the house.”

If you plan to build a shelter for your furry companions, here are a few tips to keep them safe.

  • Make sure the shelter is as wind-sheltered as possible.
  • The shelter should have bedding of some sort to provide a barrier between your pet and the ground. Straw or clean and dry blankets would work.
  • If you plan to use heat lamps, ensure that the shelter does not contain any flammable materials.

Those who encounter stray animals and want to build a shelter to help them survive the winter can follow the same guidelines. Dr. Kerenaleguen said that could be especially helpful for stray cats who tend to crawl into vehicles during the winter months.

“The biggest reason they do it is to get the heat from the engine after the vehicle has been running,” he explained. “If they have a place they can feel warm and safe, hopefully, they won’t need to hide under vehicles.”
