Wakaw wins their first-ever provincial football championship

The Wakaw Warriors have finally gotten over the golden hump after they defeated the Clavet Cougars 72-64 in the 2A six-man provincial football championships, which were held in Clavet.

This game served as sort of a revenge match for the Warriors after having lost to these same Cougars, in the same game, back in 2018.

Head coach for the team and principal at the Wakaw School, Darryl Dickson, told northeastNOW this game will forever signify a historic moment for the program, however, he thought this moment was long overdue.

“It was exciting, I think it was kind of a long time coming for us. When we played Clavet in 2018, we thought that was going to be our year, but we ended up falling apart and falling short in the second half of that game.”

Dickson even thought this title moment was so much on the horizon, the sun may have already passed on their chance at glory, especially after the hiatus caused by the pandemic last season.

“I honestly wasn’t sure if our ship had sailed once COVID hit, but at the same time, I think our kids stayed pretty busy and engaged in football during that time. They came back ready to play and it was just awesome that we were able to pull it off and may still be in the mix for next year.”

For a team like Wakaw, who had never previously won a final, Dickson knows the impact this has on his program, especially considering you can’t win multiple without winning one, as is very excited about what this means for the future.

“This is new grounds, we’ve won silver twice, but never gold. Now, finally getting over the hill, edge, hump, it’s big for our program, the kids, the school and to do it again, you have to have done it the first time.”

And Dickson spoke about the past years of his club, when he thought they were destined and the fact they always had one game that didn’t seem to go their way, just at the wrong time. Fortunate for them, this wasn’t the case this season.

“In the past six years, we’ve typically been top four and just losing one game a year, unfortunately, it was always at the wrong time. This year, ironically, we had a bad game early in the season against Carrot River, who actually played in the 1A Final. Because of the loss early in the season, we were able to get that loss out of the way early and then we never looked back, which was really big.”
