Canada Wins Bronze

Humboldt represented at Inaugural FIBA 3×3 AmeriCup in Miami

Paige Crozon, a basketball player from Humboldt, is a member of the Canadian Women’s National Basketball Team, who recently won Bronze at the Inaugural FIBA 3×3 AmeriCup in Miami, Florida.

Crozon, who still resides in Saskatchewan and is the Central Coordinator for the Living Skies Indigenous Basketball League, told northeastNOW about her experience at the event and how she and her team felt about coming home with a bronze medal.

“It was an incredible experience. We often don’t see the South American countries when we play on the 3×3 Circuit in Europe, so it was exciting to get to play against their different style of game. We ended up finishing third at the tournament, so it was just very exciting to medal at the first-ever event,” she said.

Crozon also spoke to the history this group of women will share together forever, having been the first group of Canadian women to both play at and medal in, this event.

“We have such a special bond on our team because of what we’ve gone through together. We have chemistry, which is evident on the court and I think definitely helps us in our performance. We’re now lifetime friends because of our time spent on and off the court.”

And for Crozon she mentioned how honoured she feels to be a part of this group and wear the maple leaf on her chest, as well as represent her province and the community she grew up in.

“I speak very fondly of my Saskatchewan roots and being from Humboldt. Being able to represent my province and community is always a huge honour, especially on the international stage. I hope to use the opportunities I’ve had to be a positive vessel for change and hopefully, be able to have an impact on the basketball court and beyond,” she said.

And Crozon believes in the impact the game of 3×3 can have and she said she will continue to do work to try and multiply those effects in a positive matter.

“Sports have provided me with so many useful and impactful opportunities in my life and I hope all athletes and youth get equal access to those opportunities. It starts with grassroots programs, which is why I think three on three is such a great sport,” she said.

“You just need six players and an outdoor court, which is exactly how we play on the professional circuit and with our national team. There’s also no coach, so it forces you to work on your leadership. I think there are so many positive aspects, that will really benefit youth. I hope to increase that impact in the next couple of years.”
