The funds have been raised to make an art piece at Manitou Beach a reality.

Three local artists have teamed up to create the Manitou Reflections project which is a curved stainless steel wall that will be installed on the south shore of the lake.

Artist Michael Gaudet said with the $25,000 needed for the project raised they are in the beginning stages.

“We are in a position to start working on the dimensions and exact concept of the piece with a very accurate scale drawing and we are also in a position to start looking around for the steel that we will need,” Gaudet said.

The wall will be around 12 feet high and 16 feet wide with cut-outs across the wall according to Gaudet. The project will be set into the ground with cement pilings and steel posts and will be about five feet off of the ground.

Darrel Baschak and Robert Thibualt are the two other artists that will have a hand in the project.

“We all have unique skill sets,” Gaudet said. “It (the project) will involve some very sophisticated fabrication since it’s in stainless steel.”

Thibault is the steel fabricator and Baschak is a landscape contractor and fellow artist that is assisting with the scale drawing.

As part of the fundraising efforts, the artists sold gift certificates for 100 stainless steel cut-out Canada Geese lawn ornaments. The fundraiser followed shortly after the announcement of the project was made back in December.

“I anticipate that we should have an unveiling of art the installation in mid to end July,” Gaudet said.

A First Nations re-dedication of the healing waters of Little Manitou Lake is set to take place in front of the art installation this summer as well. Many other events are in the plans for the centennial including a chainsaw carving competition.
