While the Humboldt Broncos earned themselves another W to kick off the week, they are now free to prepare themselves for a big game on Saturday.

While the Notre Dame Hounds struck first in the Elgar Petersen Arena, that did not deter the Broncos from a 5-1 win that wowed fans at home on Dec. 8.

After three years with the green and gold, Kimberley, B.C. native Braiden Koran handily earned his first hat trick of his career with goals in each period, including the Broncos’ fifth of the night on the power play with just 14 seconds left in the game.

Koran told northeastNOW a change in his pre-game ritual has amounted to pucks finding the back of the net with six goals and five assists in his last 10 games.

Other Broncos who lit up the scoreboard were Matthew Perkins and Alex Morozoff.

“We just out-worked them, I think. That all came down to us out working them and getting pucks in the net,” Koran said.

With another two points added to their total, the Broncos are now second in the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League with 46 points and a 23-8-0 record in 31 games. The battle for first place continues as Estevan earned their own two points during a 9-0 win against Notre Dame on Dec. 7. They now sit also with 46 points and a 22-5-1 record in 29 games.

Both teams are also dominating their prospective divisions. The Broncos eight points up from the second place Battlefords North Stars in the Global Ag Risk Solutions division while Estevan are 19 points up from the second place Yorkton Terriers in the Viterra Division.

Assistant coach, Rhett Blackmur told northeastNOW the Broncos will have to bring it on Saturday.

“They got scoring up front, they got great d-men and a good goalie. They’re a well-rounded team and a well-rounded club that’s been playing really well.”

The Broncos have been battling with themselves all season to ensure they play the whole 60 minutes and that is going to be even more important on Saturday.

Looking ahead to the back half of the regular season, Blackmur said they will just have to keep on going and keep building on what they’ve already done.

This will be the Broncos last chance to face the Bruins during regular season action.

Head coach Scott Barney told northeastNOW that playing the top team will be a good measure for the team. The coaching staff will be using Saturday’s game to “evaluate where some of our players are at individually and where we are as a team.”

A busy week next week will finish off 2021 for the Broncos with games in Humboldt against Kindersley and division rivals North Battleford and a trip to Notre Dame on the docket.
