Western Weekend

Mustangs looking to keep the ball rolling on western road swing

Dec 10, 2021 | 12:50 PM

The Melfort Mustangs will make their way out west for their first trips to Battlefords and Kindersley this weekend.

The Mustangs have won two games in a row with wins against Melville and Weyburn after a stretch of five losses in a row. Defenceman Lucas Ochitwa said the team is feeling good after recovering from their tough stretch in November, and the first couple days of December.

“Every win is a huge win for our team right now,” he said. “The thing right now is to just keep the ball rolling.”

They’ll get that chance to keep things rolling as they take on the Battlefords North Stars on Friday, and the Kindersley Klippers on Saturday.

It’ll be the third meeting of the season between the Stars and Mustangs as the two met in Melfort twice back in October with Battlefords winning both contests by scores of 4-1 and 3-1. Battlefords is 17-7-3-1 heading into the weekend, good for fourth place.

The Klippers and Mustangs have yet to meet this season. Kindersley sits at 12-14-0-1 on the season, good for ninth place in the SJHL.

Ochitwa said it will be a tough weekend and they’ll have to play a full 60 minutes on both nights and limit mistakes.

“Capitalize on chances as best as we can and defend hard,” Ochitwa said. “We have a really good defensive team here and we take pride in that.”

Melfort sits in fifth place in the SJHL at 15-9-1-4 on the year, four points back of the Stars.

Both games can be heard on 105 CJVR with Mat Barrett. The pre-game show begins at 7:15 p.m. on both nights.
