Strange Saturday

Mustangs win one, fall in another in unique Saturday night in Humboldt

Jan 16, 2022 | 8:42 AM

Strange, different, wild, just a few words that could be used to describe Saturday, Jan. 15 between the Melfort Mustangs and Humboldt Broncos.

First, the Mustangs and Broncos needed to complete the final 9:37 of Friday night’s game that was played under protest by the Mustangs due to officiating error. Then the two clubs needed to play the final of their home and home set.

In the final minutes of the Friday game, Nolan Doell scored two goals to put Melfort up 5-2, turning the result into Melfort’s favour. Melfort had lost the game in overtime 4-3 before the league sided with the Mustangs protest.

In the originally scheduled game, Melfort ultimately fell 6-4 in an entertaining affair. Mustang Assistant Coach Dan Meyers said the team played pretty well for the majority of the weekend, but things fell apart late on Saturday night.

“I’ll give that to the guys,” he said. “The last 15 minutes of this third period, I guess we just kind of ran out of gas.”

Dawson Leroux opened the scoring for Melfort in the first, while Alec Saretzky tied things up for the Broncos before things hit the 10-minute mark.

In the second, Marco Lopez and Boston Maxwell each scored to give Melfort a 3-1 lead, but Bronco forward Tyler Kutschinski made it 3-2 heading into the third.

The third is where Humboldt took over as Connor McGrath tied things up early on. Ben Tkachuk gave Melfort a 4-3 lead, but that only lasted a few more minutes as the Broncos put the pedal down and scored three unanswered to give them the 6-4 win.

James Venne was pulled from the Melfort net after the fifth goal after stopping 25 of 30. Joel Favreau came in to stop four out of five he faced.

Melfort had extended their win streak to 10 games heading into the originally scheduled game, and Meyers said they won’t dwell on the streak being broken.

“Proud of the boys, we had a 10 game streak going,” Meyers said. “We got to start again, so it’s all good.”

Melfort now sits with a 23-10-1-4 record, good for third place in the SJHL.
