Tough Test

Mustangs give up two third period goals in loss to Bruins

Jan 20, 2022 | 10:02 AM

The Melfort Mustangs lost a tight battle to the Estevan Bruins on Wednesday night at the Northern Lights Palace.

Melfort held a 3-2 lead heading into the third period, but two Bruin goals in the third, including one with less than five minutes to play turned the tides and handed the Mustangs their second straight loss.

After giving up the first two goals of the game in the first period, the Mustangs stormed back and scored three unanswered as Carter Anderson, Nolan Doell, and Kevin Minnoch all got on the board for the Mustangs.

The game was tied with just over 10 to play in the third and Anderson said they still felt like they had a chance in the game.

“We just had to keep the pressure going,” he said. “I don’t know, we let off a little and they got that fourth one and we didn’t have the answer back.”

Zachery Burns, Kade Runke, Jamie Valentino, and Eric Pearce all scored for Estevan.

Anderson said this loss hurts a bit more with so much on the line in the standings and the Mustangs and Bruins separated by just four points heading into the contest.

“Coming off a loss to Humboldt, we really wanted that one,” Anderson said. “Now we got to take it into Flin Flon, home and home, and try and get four points on the weekend.”

The Mustangs are just two points ahead of the division rival Bombers, meaning things could change in a hurry in the Sherwood division.

Friday night’s game will be in Melfort, while the teams will battle in Flin Flon on Saturday night, a game you can hear on 105 CJVR.
