Overtime Again

Mustangs not happy with play after overtime loss to Hawks

Feb 20, 2022 | 11:07 AM

Overtime continues to be the Achilles’ heel for the Melfort Mustangs after a 2-1 overtime loss to the Nipawin Hawks on Saturday, Feb. 19.

It was the 10th loss for the Mustangs in overtime or a shootout.

Melfort was outshot 32-15 in the contest and assistant coach Dan Meyers said there were not many positives out of this game.

“We just didn’t have our feet going, we weren’t taking body the first two periods,” he said. “I thought we controlled the third period.”

Bryden Kiesman opened the scoring for Nipawin early in the second period, while Dawson Leroux answered for Melfort about ten minutes after.

Both teams had their chances in the third period, and the overtime frame, but nobody could pull ahead until Tre Fouquette scored the overtime winner for Nipawin.

It’s just the second time the 11th place Hawks have been the Mustangs in eight meetings this season.

“We’ve got to play a full sixty minutes, it doesn’t matter where the other team is in the standings,” Meyers said. “We’ve got to start right now and get to playing full sixties.”

Melfort pulls ahead of Battlefords – who was idle on Saturday – with 61 points. The Mustangs are back at it on Tuesday when they visit the Nipawin Hawks.
