Favreau, Mustangs shut out Hawks at the Cage

Mar 6, 2022 | 10:35 AM

Joel Favreau stopped 18 shots as the Melfort Mustangs defeated the Nipawin Hawks 3-0 at Centennial Arena in Nipawin on Friday night.

It was Favreau’s first appearance since Feb. 5 against Kindersley after recovering from an injury. Assistant coach Dan Meyers said it’s nice to see Favreau back.

“Just nice to see him back between the pipes,” Meyers said. “He’s kicking the pucks, and he’s just very aggressive. Just glad to see him back.”

Nolan Doell opened the scoring for Melfort just over seven minutes into the game, and from that point on, it was all Melfort.

“The first period, we kind of dictated how we were going to play,” Meyers said. “We came out hitting, skating hard, and it just seemed like right from there we had the flow of the game, to be honest.”

Carter Anderson would score in the second for Melfort while Doell would score his second of the night and 30th of the season as some extra cushion in the third period. The win is Melfort’s fifth in a row and gives them 71 points on the season, two ahead of Flin Flon, and one ahead of Battlefords for third place in the SJHL.

The Mustangs host Nipawin on Saturday night at the Northern Lights Palace. A game that will be free admission for all. The puck drops at 7:30 p.m.
