Sixth annual Positive Ticketing Campaign underway in Humboldt area

For the sixth year, Safe Communities Humboldt and Area are holding their Positive Ticketing Campaign.

The campaign began on Wednesday, May 15 and will end on Friday, November 15 as local emergency services hand out positive tickets to those expressing safe and inclusive behaviours in the region. Safe Communities Humboldt and Area Executive Director Shari Hinz said people can get tickets for several positive actions.

“Things like wearing the proper safety gear when they are biking, or scootering out in our recreation spaces,” Hinz said. “Also, choosing to keep others safe by helping people cross the street safely, and displaying inclusive behaviours as well.”

Hinz said the inclusive behaviours could include things like inviting someone to the playground when they may be playing alone.

Humboldt RCMP, Humboldt and District Ambulance, and Humboldt Fire are all involved in the program and will be giving out tickets throughout the next few months. Hinz said the program benefits the emergency crews as well as those who get tickets.

“Having our emergency services work with our youth in this capacity also helps the youth see them in a different light,” Hinz told northeastNOW. “Typically they’re responding to trauma and crisis. This time they are awarding them with a positive ticket for recognizing their safe and inclusive behaviour.”

Hinz added anyone can get a positive ticket, but the program is mostly to reward youth.

“If they model those behaviours as youth, they become safe adults,” Hinz said.

When someone gets a positive ticket, they can take it to city hall or the Humboldt Uniplex and redeem it for a smaller prize. They will then be entered into the grand prize draw for a Bluetooth speaker.
