Sherwood Division up for grabs as Mustangs battle Bombers to end regular season

The Sherwood Division is the only division left to decide in the SJHL as just a week remains in the regular season.

The Estevan Bruins and Humboldt Broncos have already clinched their respective divisions, but the Sherwood is sure to be a dog fight right until the end as the Melfort Mustangs and Flin Flon Bombers battle this week.

It all begins on Tuesday as the Mustangs visit Flin Flon for the first of the home and home that will conclude on Thursday in Melfort. Heading into the home and home, the Mustangs lead the Bombers by just two points. With these being Melfort’s final games of the regular season, Flin Flon has one game remaining after.

Mustang forward Noah Wilson said they’re not too worried about scoreboard watching, but more worried about controlling what they can right now.

“We might need a little bit of help from a couple of teams,” he said. “But we’ve just got to worry about ourselves, worry about these games against Flin Flon, and the rest will take care of itself.”

Melfort could finish anywhere from third to fifth place and could see four different opponents in the first round depending on the final results of the regular season.

With the playoffs right around the corner, and Melfort currently on a six-game win streak, Wilson said there’s a lot of excitement as the postseason nears.

“We’ve gone on this little stretch now and I think it’s perfect timing for us,” Wilson said. “So I think nothing but excitement around the room and in the rink and in the community.”

Head-to-head against Flin Flon, the Bombers lead the series 4-2, but the last two games have been decided by just a single goal. You can hear all the action on Tuesday on 105 CJVR with Mat Barrett’s pre-game show starting at 7:15 p.m., and puck drop being at 7:30 p.m.
