Birch Hills hockey squad claims Twin Rivers Hockey Championship

The Birch Hills Senior Blackhawks are champions of the Twin Rivers Hockey League.

The team beat the Shellbrook Silvertips 6-3 in Game 3 over the weekend at the Birch Hills Arena.

Reed Gunville, Kyle Njaa, Brandon Juravinski and Adam Hergott scored for the Blackhawks with Boedy Donald and Chad Grambo contributing with assists. Kody Kushniruk made 17 saves for the win.

“It feels pretty good, especially in front of the home crowd,” said player and captain Tyler Tilford. “It was a pretty full barn so that was pretty awesome.”

Brady Keller was named the Twin Rivers Hockey League Most Valuable Player for the playoffs with six goals and eight assists.

The Blackhawks also won the Most Gentlemanly Team Award, taking no penalties in the game.

It was a rewarding end to a season that Tilford said was tough at the start.

“Everyone was pretty rusty and kind of outta shape. So, it took a while to get back in the groove but once we did, we had a good group of guys and a lot of good players, so it didn’t take long for us to get into the swing of things. We picked up some really good young guys that came in and really helped out.”

With the playoffs over, Tilford said the team is already looking forward to next year.

“Sounds like most of the guys are coming back. We’ll probably lose a couple guys that will decide to hang it up, but it’ll be good. We’ll have a good crew. We got some other young guys that want to come and play next year, so that’ll really help out.”

At the end of it all, Tilford is happy they were able to bring the championship to Birch Hills and revive a community who, like so many in Saskatchewan, have felt the impacts of the last two years.

“We get quite a few young kids come and really look up to us and it helps the rink out. We generate lots of money for the rink, which is nice. So, it gives something for people to come out and do and watch. It’s pretty much the same, every small town, senior team to go to.”
