Mustang fall behind early, can’t recover in game four loss to Terriers

The Melfort Mustangs are now in a three-games-to-one hole in their SJHL quarterfinal series against the Yorkton Terriers.

The Mustangs fell 5-2 to the Terriers on Wednesday night in game four of their series and there weren’t a ton of positives to take from this one as the Mustangs fell down 3-0 before 11 minutes had even elapsed in the hockey game.

Mustangs assistant coach Dan Meyers said the team didn’t come out as hard as they wanted to.

“Didn’t come out hitting,” he said. “We had a game plan and we didn’t follow what we had in the game plan.”

Karsten Kruska scored 18 seconds into the contest followed by goals from Tyson Janzen and Kody Norberg to make it 3-0.

Melfort would responded just over halfway through the second period as Curtis Hammond notched his first goal of the playoffs, but the Terrier three-goal lead was quickly restored less than a minute later by J.D. Hall.

Hammond would score again just about nine minutes into the third period to make it 4-2, and it seemed like Melfort had life. Melfort outshot Yorkton 39-24 in the game and Meyers said there were moments they controlled play.

“There were signs of it,” Meyers said, “but we were just too inconsistent with playing hard really what it comes down to.”

Kishaun Gervais would notch an empty netter for the Terriers who are now just one win away from the SJHL semifinals.

Game five of the series goes on Friday back in Melfort. Puck drop is at 7:30 p.m. at the palace.
