Mustangs force game 6 after convincing home win over Terriers

Mar 26, 2022 | 9:19 AM

The Melfort Mustangs are still alive in the SJHL Playoffs after a convincing 5-1 win over the Yorkton Terriers, forcing a game six in the league’s quarterfinals. The Terriers lead the series 3-2.

Clarke Huxley’s third goal of the playoffs opened the scoring for Melfort to give them an early lead, a lead which they never let go of.

Tye Scherger and Thomas Moore scored 12 seconds apart in the second period to extend Melfort’s lead to 3-0 before the Terriers got one back 19 seconds after that for a 3-1 game after two periods.

Melfort would pad their lead with goals from Noah Wilson and Marco Lopez as they fired 45 shots towards Terriers netminder Kael DePape.

Joel Favreau stopped 22 of 23 in the win and says as a team, they knew what was at stake.

“I don’t think we’ve played our best before this,” he said. “We know we’re the better team, and we played like it tonight.”

After a game that saw Favreau allow four goals, including three in the first period in game four, he said it was nice to get back into his groove on Friday night.

“Obviously it’s a nice little bounceback,” Favreau said. “But the boys played a hell of a game in front of me, they made my life really easy back there.”

It was also a big night for the Mustang powerplay that went three-for-eight in the contest after being a dormant 1/24 in the first four games of the series.

Game six of the best-of-seven will be in Yorkton on Sunday at 6 p.m. and it can be heard on 105 CJVR.
