Successful 2018 for Melfort Golf and Country Club, good start to 2019

The Melfort Golf and Country Club held its Annual General Meeting on Wednesday, May 22 and the club is calling 2018 a success.

After somewhat of a down year in 2017, the club said business picked back up in 2018. President Don Meier said weather was a big reason for the better season on the course.

“We have a great irrigation system,” Meier said. “That, and the fact that the new cart paths were put in over the last two or three years. So even if it is wet, the guys get out. So, that donation from a few years ago has been very much appreciated, and it’s added a lot of value to the course.”

Revenue streams were up in every category in 2018, including green fees, memberships, carts, the kitchen, and lounge. There were also 198 more rounds played in 2018 than in 2017. The increased revenue allowed the club to have $3,000 of net income in 2018. Normally, that net income would go toward paying off debt, but leadership announced at the meeting the club is now debt free.

“It’s really nice,” Meier told northeastNOW. “Because I guess the one thing when you have no debt, you have less desire to take on debt. So, it’s sort of a self-fulfilling prophecy that we will do better, and maybe we can fundraise down the road when we need something, rather than borrow money for it.”

Meier added the $3,000 net income doesn’t have a specific destination yet, but he said there is always something that needs to be replaced or something that needs to be bought.

He said the start of 2019 is looking bright for the golf course as it’s already in great condition. With the course in such good shape early on, General Manager Kevin Ryhorchuk gave lots of credit to his grounds crew.

“Lawrence (Campeau) and the staff, they put it to bed at the right time. They did their homework, you could say,” he said. “I just think with the amount of snow — good cover. We have a couple of little issues, but we’re ahead of schedule from last year.”

With sponsorships up in 2018 to around $57,000, helping reach the net income, Ryhorchuk said it’s great to see the support of people in the area.

“Over the years, everybody’s budgets are different,” he said. “It’s tough, and times are tough too for everybody, so it’s greatly appreciated with the support that we get from our corporate sponsors from throughout the northeast.”
