Fourth city-wide garage sale in Melfort set for Saturday

May 23, 2019 | 4:51 PM

The fourth year of the Melfort City Wide Garage Sale is taking place Saturday, May 23 this year.

Jacey Bailey is the organizer of the event, and said the idea came from her family going to the Montgomery Garage Sale in Saskatoon which has hundreds of participants.

“I realized that all it took was someone to volunteer to organize it,” Bailey told northeastNOW. “And we’d be able to do something like that and get everybody together, and join in as a community and get everybody outside and walking around, and also get rid of some of our junk.”

Bailey said the response from the community has been great. Different organizations have been involved throughout the years as they get some more traffic through the event.

“We’ve done nothing but go up in participation every year,” she said. “I think the first year I did it, I got 20 houses and this is our fourth year and we have over 50 houses participating this year.”

Not only do houses participate every year, even some churches in the city have garage sales of their own. Meanwhile, the Northeast SPCA has been involved for a few years and they will have a barbecue at the Co-op grocery store at the Melfort Mall. The Melfort Flea Market has also been involved in the past.

Maps of the locations of all the garage sales can be found on the various Melfort Buy and Sell Facebook pages, and at the participating location on Saturday. Bailey said that while the event is advertised as 9 a.m. to 4 p.m, people are still able to host garage sales on Friday and Sunday.

She added that the event will go forward no matter what.

“We’ve decided to carry on rain or shine this Saturday,” Bailey said. “So I really hope to see everybody out, and I hope that the rain decides to do all of its business overnight on Friday so we can have a good day Saturday.”
