Unemployment rate falls in Canada, rises in Saskatchewan

Canada’s unemployment rate fell to its lowest level on record in March.

Statistics Canada said Friday the national unemployment rate dropped to 5.3 per cent, the lowest it has been since comparable data started being recorded in 1976.

The previous record was 5.4 per cent in May of 2019.

Employment rose by 73,000 jobs nationally last month as the unemployment rate fell by 0.2 per cent from February.

Employment in Saskatchewan fell by 4,500 jobs and the unemployment rate rose from 4.7 per cent in February to 5.0 per cent in March.

Even so, the province’s unemployment rate was the second-lowest in the country, behind only the 4.1 per cent in Quebec.

Year over year, Saskatchewan’s unemployment rate dropped by 2.2 per cent from March of 2021.

The unemployment rate fell by 0.2 per cent in each of Saskatchewan’s two largest cities in March. Saskatoon’s rate dropped to 4.6 per cent, while Regina’s fell to 5.2 per cent.
