More kimberlites marked for review at mine site

Exploration continues at the Fort à la Corne diamond mine exploration site with several more kimberlites being found to have “significant potential to add to the FalCon Project”.

Star Diamond announced yesterday that geologists that have been working on the site found another cluster of kimberlites that rate further assessment.

In addition to the Orion South and Star kimberlites, Orion North will be part of the focus, said George Read, senior technical advisor.

“The Orbit exploration team has shown that there are significant additional opportunities among the Fort à la Corne kimberlites to increase the potential ore available to a future diamond mine,” he said in a news release.

Orion North, which is located very close to the previously identified kimberlites, includes K120, K147, K148, K220.

“The geological model for Orion North contains a significant volume of kimberlite known to be diamond bearing, as shown by previous large diameter drilling conducted by Star Diamond. Additional evaluation work is required to enable this kimberlite to reach mineral resource status,” Read said.

Geologists are using several methods to examine and prioritize the additional Fort à la Corne kimberlites.

Rio Tinto, an Australian mining giant, is the larger partner in the project, owning 75 per cent to Star’s 25 per cent. Star Diamond has its head office in Saskatoon.
