Several players from northeast Saskatchewan caught the attention of teams from the Western Hockey League (WHL).

The 2022 WHL Bantam Draft took place Thursday with the Medicine Hat Tigers selecting Gavin McKenna of Whitehorse, Yukon with the first overall pick.

It would be sometime before a northeast player would be selected when Tisdale’s Jaxon Kehrig was taken 81st overall by the Kelowna Rockets.

Kehrig played most of last season with the North East Wolfpack U15 AA squad where he put up 37 goals and 37 assists in 31 games.

He recently signed to join the Tisdale Trojans for next season.

Another Tisdale product selected in the draft was Kehrig’s teammate Lucas Hvidston who was picked up 275th by the Lethbridge Hurricanes. Hvidston had 23 goals for 48 points last season for the Wolf Pack.

The Tisdale Trojans also saw one of their players land with a WHL team when the Kelowna Rockets picked up Eric Han with the 205th pick. Han spent his U15 AA days with the Regina Pat Blues.

Lethbridge picked up another northeast player when they drafted Rhett Vedress of Annaheim. Vedress played 32 games for the Humboldt Broncos U18 AA team where he had 19 points last season, adding three assists in the playoffs.

Meanwhile, Kayd Ruedig of Humboldt was taken 84th by Portland while the Prince George Cougars picked up fellow Humboldt player Brady Holtvogt 116th.

Ruedig had 15 goals for the Humboldt Broncos U15 AA club last season while Holtvogt played 23 games in the net, winning 12 of them, adding two more wins in the playoffs.
