Carrot River holding byelection for vacant council seat

Three candidates have tossed their hats in the ring to fill in the empty seat on Carrot River’s council.

Heavy equipment operator Dylan Borody, former Carrot River Fire Chief Scott Debienne, and business owner Joseph Doerksen will be the candidates for a 24-month term after former councillor Robin Horn resigned in June.

Kevin Trew, an administrator for Carrot River, said the town is fortunate to have more candidates than positions available on council since the 2016 municipal election.

“Prior to that we haven’t had a municipal election for a number of years,” Trew told northeastNOW. “It was a new thing to have more people interested in the position than there were spots available.”

Trew said the voter turn out for Carrot River has been hovering around 25 and 30 per cent for the 2016 election and another byelection in 2017.

Councillors earn $4,800 a year and must attend a monthly public council meeting and a committee of the whole meeting every two months.

Residents and property owners in Carrot River can vote in the byelection on Oct. 23 if they have lived in Saskatchewan for six months, Carrot River for three months, and are at least 18 years old.
