Melfort parade to kick off exhibition weekend

Jul 21, 2022 | 1:19 PM

The Melfort parade, exhibition and fair are all set to return this weekend for the first time since 2019.

The combined three-day event will take place July 22, 23 and 24, starting off with the parade on Friday morning.

Hosted this year by the Melfort Trade Alliance and Chamber of Commerce, the parade will begin at 10:30 a.m. as floats and vehicles of all kinds line up and take off from Bemister Avenue and Assiniboia Street.

Chamber executive director, Cam Lee, told northeastNOW they are excited to host the parade once again. Even before COVID it’s been a number of years since they were last involved.

“The current chamber board and I have never actually hosted one before. The last parade was put on by the Melfort Ag Society and we have to tip our hats to them for keeping the tradition alive.”

Lee also noted how it was nice to take a bit of the ‘weight off the shoulders’ of the Melfort Ag Society, as they are organizing the exhibition.

“I think when the time came to organize a parade, they were happy to kind of give us what we needed to do that. We know how much work it takes to plan a parade or to plan an exhibition, so we’re just we’re happy to take it over again.”

As for the exhibition, it will feature horse shows, chariot races, beer gardens, live entertainment and the midway, which is provided by West Coast Amusements.

Melfort Ag Society manager, Kim Eskowich, explained there’s no better way to kick off their event than with the parade.

“The parade has always been a big hit with everybody in Melfort and we open up the gates right after the parade is over so there are quite a few people that attend to parade and come straight over to the fairgrounds.”

A three-day adult gate pass will cost $45, while a three-day child gate pass will cost $20. For one-day gate passes, an adult will cost $18 and a child will cost $8.

The grounds will be open 9 a.m. to midnight all three days, with chuckwagons, light horse shows, petting zoos, motocross, Laughing Loggers and grandstands, which will include Indigo Circus, The Stampeders and Hypnotist Roger Boucher.
