Local father-son duo to compete at Ray Carter Cup

A father and son duo from Humboldt will look to bring home National Gold at this year’s Ray Carter Cup in Saskatoon.

The four-day tournament which begins this Thursday, Aug 25, and ends on Sunday, Aug 28, will give Paul and Carter Huls the chance to compete for the championship as members of Team Sask.

Paul will serve as assistant coach of the Baseball Sask 15U Selects Provincial Team, while his son, Carter, will suit up as a utility player.

Both of them told northeastNOW how special it will be to do this for the first time, together.

“I was super excited when I got the call to be on the team and then doing it together, it just makes it more exciting,” said Carter.

“It’s fun, me and Carter have been doing ball together for years already, so we just carry on, doing what we like to do,” added Paul.

This will mark the first Ray Carter Cup since 2019 after the past two championships were cancelled due to COVID-19.

With that in mind, along with having it so close to home, they recognized how wonderful this year’s opportunity represents.

“That’s gonna make it even better, having the hometown crowd cheering us on,” Carter said.

“Having all the relatives and anyone who knows all the players from the whole area coming out, we can draw a big crowd and that makes it good,” Paul added.

And there should be no reason why there won’t be great crowds, especially for the Saskatchewan games, as they will be bringing two different teams.

Team Sask has been granted a second team (the right you get when you host), as Muenster’s own Chad Hofmann will be the head coach of the 15U Development Provincial Team.

His club will be viewed as the host team or Team Sask 2, which is something he told northeastNOW can only be used as motivation.

“We know that we have expectations of our own team and we’re gonna do just fine. When you get to a championship, there are lots of good players and it’ll be a unique experience. It gives another group of kids a chance to participate in a national championship in baseball.”

Hofmann, who is an assistant coach for the 18U AAA Muenster Red Sox, will use his coaching experience to try and lead his provincewide group to victory and ‘prove everyone wrong.’
