Police search for suspect in daring ATM thefts

Sep 19, 2018 | 5:00 PM

Police officers are looking for a suspect who rammed a stolen vehicle into the side of two different banks in an apparent effort to steal ATM machines.

The first incident happened in the early morning of Sept. 13. Officers responded to an alarm in Choiceland and found extensive damage to the outside of the building and an abandoned truck  stolen from a nearby business. Surveillance footage shows a man entering the lobby and trying to damage the ATM but fleeing on foot after his efforts failed. The suspect can be seen wearing a light-coloured sweater with a small logo on the upper left chest area, dark pants and gloves. He had his hood up and his face was partially covered.

Just three days later, police were dispatched to another bank for a similar call in White Fox, a community 13 kms northwest of Nipawin. Again, surveillance footage showed a vehicle backing into the lobby of the bank but this time, the thief was successful.

“The suspect then secured the ATM to the truck and forcefully removed it before fleeing the scene in an unknown direction,” a release from Nipawin RCMP said.
