Variety of topics discussed at monthly council meeting

The City of Melfort held its monthly council meeting on Monday to discuss a variety of topics concerning the community.

Notable points on the agenda included the fire department, a sewer study and plan, an off-leash dog park, and community surplus.

Sewer Study and Plan: Council has approved the hiring of consulting engineers to complete a study on the existing sanitary collection system and develop a sanitary sewer master plan.

When asked about the issue, Mayor Glenn George told northeastNOW it’s not an immediate problem.

“It’s just that if we don’t know how long our lagoon system is going to last. I don’t know exactly, but I think it’s good for up to 10,000 people. We need to have a plan for everything so that we’re not just operating by the seat of our pants and we can predict when things will have to get upgraded.”

Fiscal Surplus: During the 2021 fiscal year, the City of Melfort generated a net surplus of over $1.3 million, which has since been transferred to their reserve funds.

Off-leash Dog Park: Council has approved the establishment of an off-leash dog park at Spruce Haven Park.

A public engagement survey was released online to the public for four weeks, starting on July 14 and ending on August 12, which generated a total of 385 complete survey responses.

George explained the results showed how much the community truly wanted one.

“Our citizens have been asking for one and it turned out that they really want one, so we’re gonna build one. It was one of those things that in the past we just went ahead and did, but now, because of transparency, you want to get the community involved.”

Fire Department Events: The Melfort Fire Department has been able to host more public education events, as of late, which included two in August.

The department was able to hold their annual Touch a Truck, as well as have the Melfort Coop Daycare come for a fire hall tour.

They are also expected to hold their open house, in person, for the first time since 2019, something George mentioned “is great to finally get back to.”
