Mustangs set for high intensity weekend home and home against Broncos

The Melfort Mustangs are getting set for a home and home series this weekend against the Humboldt Broncos.

It all kicks off on Friday, Sep. 22 as the two battle in Melfort, while the series will shift to Humboldt on Saturday night.

The Mustangs and Broncos battled in two highly competitive and intense pre-season affairs just a few weeks ago and Mustang netminder Joel Favreau said while the rivalry has always been there, it’s seemed to have continued to heat up over the last couple of seasons.

“Kind of turning into a pretty good rivalry for us,” Favreau said. “Players hate each other, coaches don’t really like other either, so it’s always a pretty fun game to play in.”

Favreau was recently named the Goalie of the Week in the SJHL after he went 1-1 last weekend, only allowing two goals on 49 shots. Favreau noted it was an honour to receive that recognition, but he’s keeping his eyes on the season.

“It’s a long year,” he said. “So just keeping the head calm and trying to show up every game with the same consistency.”

The 20-year-old netminder and his Mustangs sit at 1-1-0-0 on the year as they battle the 1-0-0-0 Broncos. Game time is 7:30 p.m. on both nights.
