Showcase Week

Mustangs set to battle Hounds and North Stars at annual Warman Showcase

Sep 26, 2022 | 10:38 AM

It’s showcase week in the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL).

Scouts from schools in various leagues make their way to Warman, Sask for four days of high end SJHL hockey to try and find their next star.

Melfort Mustangs forward Clarke Huxley said it’s a different experience but there’s still a job to be done as these games still count for points in the regular season standings.

“It’s cool to have all the scouts there but it doesn’t really change much,” Huxley said. “We still have to play our game, don’t want to play for the scouts, got to play for the team.”

The Mustangs are going to need to play as a team as they sit with a record of 1-2-1-0 through four games. Most recently, a weekend sweep at the hands of the Humboldt Broncos which included a 7-4 defeat on Friday, but a good response in a 3-2 overtime loss on Saturday.

Huxley said there’s positives to take from this early season stretch, and they’ll get back on track soon.

“With the exception of Friday, I think we’re playing well, maybe just the bounces aren’t going our way,” he said. “Just got to weather the storm and get through it.”

The Mustangs will take on the Notre Dame Hounds who are 1-2-0-0 on the season to this point, while their other opponent, the Battlefords North Stars are a perfect 4-0-0-0 heading into Showcase week. Melfort will be in action on Tuesday and Wednesday against the Hounds and Stars respectively with both games in Warman at 10:30 a.m.
